Global Responsibility
Fitts | Stair Components
Fitts Industries, Inc. is dedicated to the efficient use of our sustainable natural resources. Great lengths are taken each and everyday in the procurement and processing of raw materials to reduce the effects on our planet. Our responsibility as stewards of lumber greatly reduce negative strains on our suppliers and make effective and efficient use of those materials.
Lumber is air dried and later kiln dried. Fitts Industries, Inc. utilizes saw dust waste: burning this material and utilizing this heat to
create steam to operate the kilns. In effect, reducing the amount of
electrical power needed in our
operation. The air drying process also eliminates the need to run
pre-driers that put a strain on the power grid. Even the stacking sticks you see between the boards are recycled time and time again to minimize waste.
Fitts kiln dries its’ own lumber to
control the equilibrium moisture content of the material. Most stair components are made of glued “plies” of wood. Cutting for solid blanks of wood
creates far more waste and would not be cost effective. The process of gluing plies of wood creates less waste, provides a more economical product and stable product, and created less burden on the demand of lumber.
Fitts utilizes thin curf saw blades which
reduce the amount of material that is created by a thicker saw blade.
